Besides the fact that it was sunshiny, a little chilly, not too windy. The mussel boats gave us the biggest headache, rocking and rolling the boat!
The mailboat captain, besides wanting to marry my mother and be my stepfather, was quite humorous. He talked in the microphone and most of what he said what hard to hear or understand and he was a very quick speaking kiwi.
Some of the interesting things we saw were a 400 year old tree and the dolphins swimming with the boat.
Havelock is the green mussel capital of the world. We cruised passed many mussel beds and were even shown (with a model Mark, showing us the model) how the mussels are harvested. Did you know they have to get the mussel spat from the 90 mile beach up in the northland. No one knows when the spat is going to arrive or where the spat’s origin is. Then it is transferred to Havelock and they try and get the spat to jump to the Christmas tree rope. From there they wrap it in biodegradeable sleeve. These are then passed through the floats.
The mailboat is a catamaran and can run up on shore when the customer has no dock.
Here are some pictures from our day!
